May 2024: Welcome summer research students! So excited to have Leon, Katinka, Arvin, Sophia, and Syrus with us this summer!

May 2024: End of year dinner! Time for summer!

April 2024: Congrats to our undergraduate research thesis students Shriya and Diego! We’re excited to cheer them on as Shriya continues to graduate school and Diego starts work as an analyst.

April 2024: Wrapped up a fantastic Chemical Biophysics Symposium! Jared and Melissa got to share some of single-molecule and materials work! Alana presented at the final session on bioinspired materials and diagnostics. We will be back next year!

April 2024: Diego Estrada presented at the Southern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference on April 6, 2024, along with Rachel Mander from the Korzynski lab! Deigo presented his research on single-molecule studies of enzyme inhibition. Go Diego!

March 2024: The Ogata lab had the pleasure of hosting two high school students through the UTM STEM fellowship program. They shadowed Justin and Melissa for two days and it was fun to show them a day in the life at university and as a graduate student, their enthusiasm was contagious!

March 2024: Alana, Melissa, and Kezia host 4 undergraduate students for the WiSC chemistry lab day. Had fun looking at single enzyme molecules using a fluorescence microscope and our own hair using the scanning electron microscope!

 2023

December 2023: Jared King designed and lead a module as part of the INSPIRE program at UTM for summer 2023. We are excited to participate in 2024 again! Link to full article.

September 2022: Welcome Ruben, Shirley, Ian, and Gurjap! We are excited to have four undergraduate thesis students join the Ogata lab for 2022-2023. Their research will focus on protein-metal interactions, biosensor development, nanozyme MOFs, and single particle fluorescence.

August 2022: Our undergraduate students Shriya and Christine designed and presented their own poster at SURF. Congratulations on all the summer research! Thanks to their work in collaboration with Ruben, they developed a more efficient process for fabricating highly reproducible gold leaf electrodes.

July 2022: Congratulations to Advikaa for being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Fellowship!

July 2022: Alana receives the Connaught Early Researcher Award!

July 2022: Alana attends the Bioanalytical Sensors Gordan Research Conference. Had a fantastic time connecting with other faculty and graduate students, and being discussion leader for the Pathogens session. Inspiring cutting-edge research the whole week!

June 2022: The Ogata lab attends the Canadian Chemistry Conference in Calgary! Justin presented at his first national conference and shared his work on nanozyme MOFs. Advikaa presented a poster and won 2nd place poster prize! Karan from the Krull lab at UTM won first! (go UofT chemistry!)

May 2022: Can’t believe we are already one month into summer research! Can summer last forever? Celebrating our month’s hard work with a lab dinner.

May 2022: Advikaa is receives the CPS Teaching Fellowship Program award to design new pedagogical tools for Forensic Science and Analytical Chemistry courses at UTM.

May 2022: Justin VanHouten leads a team of undergraduate students for UTM’s first Indicium program. Students worked throughout the semester on a literature review and presented at the UTM Indicium STEM Fellowship Conference. Congrats to Justin’s team who won the competition and will be moving on to the national STEM Fellowship competition!

May 2022: Welcome summer undergraduate research students! The Ogata Lab is excited to have Shriya, Ruben, Christine, and Gurjap join the team. Shriya is an NSERC USRA fellow working on the development of impedance bioresistors using peroxidase mimic MOFs for activity-based diagnostics. Ruben (ROP) and Christine (ROP) will support the development of impedance bioresistors using MOF biocomposites for point-of-care detection of proteins. Gurjap (ROP)will support the investigation of peroxidase-mimic MOFs and their structure-functions relationships. See their mini bios on the team page.

 

May 2022: Advikaa presents at the Graduate Research Conference Poster session at UTM (and even brought a demo of her IBR device).

December 2021: Professor Ogata awarded the UTM Research and Scholarly Activity Fund! Our lab is appreciative of the support from UTM Research and excited to use this seed funding to start our diagnostic research!
